Vibrating Tattoo Syncs with Your Smartphone for Alerts

Nokia recently filed a patent for a haptic communication system consisting of a magnetic tattoo that would receive signals from a smartphone and vibrate to alert users of incoming calls.

  • If you’re tired of missing incoming calls because you don’t hear your phone ringing in a noisy place or don’t feel it vibrating in your purse, a new system from Nokia could enable you to be in constant contact with family and friends. The Finnish phone company is working to develop a tattoo that would vibrate to alert you of a call.
Nokia recently filed a patent for a haptic communication system that would be “capable of detecting a magnetic field and transferring a perceivable stimulus to the skin, wherein the perceivable stimulus relates to the magnetic field." In such a notification system, a small iron tattoo would be painted on a user’s skin. The tattoo would then be able to receive a magnetic signal and vibrate when the phone is ringing.

Particularly neat about the device would be its ability to vary its movements. Strong, weak, long, and short pulses could be combined to make different patterns for different signals. Different callers, for instance, might be signaled by different vibration patterns.
Around the internet, bloggers are providing various reactions to the technology’s usefulness but potential creepiness. “There probably are some valid use cases for something like this,” writes Vlad Bobleanta on Underwired View “For example, in noisy environments when you risk not hearing your phone, this tech would make sure you know it is ringing. Or even at the exact opposite end of the spectrum, it could prove useful in very quiet situations, where even a phone set to vibrate can be heard and can be disturbing. Although with this use case we are already plunging into creepy territory.”
One added benefit of the technology might be its ability to provide failsafe reminders. Need to take medicine at a certain time each day or remember to call your mother? Syncing the tattoo with your smartphone’s calendar could enable vibrations to remind you of all kinds of important tasks.
Once this kind of technology is on the market, would you consider getting a tattoo to go with your latest phone? Add your comments in the section below!
